Summer Hedgehog Card
This adorable beach ball hedgehog craft can be used as a stand-alone art project, or it can be turned into a unique card for a summer birthday. Make multiple hedgehogs, punch holes at the top and then string on twine or gift ribbon to form a summer party banner!
If friends or family are visiting this summer, this project encourages littles to sit down; it’s a break from running around in the heat and a chance for out-of-town friends or family to cooperate on a project and have a chat. If you have lots of company, challenge the group to make a rainbow of hedgehogs—one person colors their beach balls shades of red, another person orange, etc., all the way to purple!

- White cardstock
- Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
- Scissors
- Gluestick
- Pom poms (optional)

How to Make the Summer Hedgehog Craft
Perfect for summer, this cute craft will keep everyone’s fine motor skills in tip-top shape by coloring inside the beach ball lines and using scissors to cut everything out.
1. Download and print the beachball hedgehog craft template. Our Summer Hedgehog Craft Template is available in our Teachers Pay Teachers shop! After purchasing the template, download it to your device and then print it on white cardstock. The PDF files include a blank hedgehog template, as well as files to create a summer card. We even included a selection of paper wiggly eyes so kids can design their own hedgehog.
2. Color the hedgehog and beachball templates. Use markers, crayons, or colored pencils to color the patterns! We used our favorite Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils.
3. Cut the templates. Use scissors to cut apart the hedgehog body, card template, and beachballs.
4. Put the craft together. Secure each beachball to the hedgehog’s body with glue as pictured below. If you wish to turn your hedgehog into a summer card, glue the top of the hedgehog’s body to the second template that contains the text “Happy Summer!”
If you are using the blank templates, you may wish to add plastic wiggly eyes and a pom pom nose to your hedgehog.
5. Enjoy the craft. Your hedgehog craft is complete! Use tape to hang the hedgehog to the refrigerator, a door, or your classroom, or enjoy gifting them to friends, family, or neighbors.
Take it Further
- Creative counting: Think of as many round or circular summer items as possible beyond beach balls (pool umbrellas, inner tubes, coasters, lemon slices, etc.). See who can come up with the most. You can even make a bingo card with the list of items to take to your next backyard party and see who can check them all off!
- Animal exploration: Do hedgehogs like the heat? Visit the library for a book about hedgehogs to learn more, or challenge an older child to think of the best search terms to use for an adult-guided Google search on the question.
- Summer days: When does summer start? When does it end? What are summer activities where you live? If you’re in the northern hemisphere, learn about traditional summer activities in the southern hemisphere. (Hint: It involves candy canes and Christmas carols.)
- Pool toys: Check out the Guinness Book of World Records website to learn more about the largest pool toys on record, including an inflatable swan measuring 70 feet tall, 54 feet wide and 50 feet long made in California in 2017. Talk to your child about pool inflatables they’ve seen—which was the most interesting?
