Are you searching for the perfect handmade Christmas ornament to commemorate 2020? We just couldn’t help ourselves with this funny DIY toilet paper ornament! Looking back through the year, there has been a mountain of events to feel heartbroken, horrified, frustrated, afraid, or angry about. But the great Toilet Paper Shortage of 2020?
Well, we can laugh about that one now, right? 😬
How to Make a Toilet Paper Ornament
Every Christmas season, I buy or make an ornament that represents our year as a family. But this year, there were no special vacations or family celebrations.
Like most people in 2020, we just stayed home.
My family hosted small backyard campfires and illustrated large-scale driveway chalk art. We grew vegetables and baked bread. We hiked in parks and made crafts around the kitchen table. And dare I confess that we contemplated using “the family cloth” if our toilet paper stash ran out? (I had a stack of old t-shirts prepared, just in case!)
So to symbolize this year, I choose toilet paper. It’s the perfect light-hearted quarantine Christmas ornament for 2020! I can’t wait to give it away to family and friends.
Craft Supplies Needed for the Toilet Paper Ornament
- White grosgrain ribbon – 1.5 inches x 3 yards
- Large wooden spools – 1.12-inch x 2.75 inches
- Permanent double-sided tape
- Number stickers – About 1.25 inches x 1.5-inch.
- Christmas twine
- Kraft cardstock (brown)
- Pinking shears
- Paper cutter
- Cricut Crafters Only – No need to purchase number stickers! Grab your black vinyl, then click here for my 2020 Toilet Paper Ornament Design Space File.
Directions for the Toilet Paper Ornament
1. After gathering supplies (we purchased most of our craft supplies from Michaels), use a paper cutter to trim a piece of Kraft cardstock into a 3-inch x 1.5-inch strip. Next, place a small piece of double-sided tape on one end of the cardstock, then wrap it around the center of the wood spool to create a miniature toilet paper roll.
Don’t make the roll too tight; you want your toilet paper roll to slide on the holder, just like real toilet paper!
Why? Because you can’t make a toilet paper ornament without creating a tiny toilet paper roll for the inside. It’s 2020…we have time to get caught up in ridiculous details.
2. After making the toilet paper roll, press a small piece of double-sided tape to it. Line up your ribbon to the tape and begin rolling!
3. Continue rolling! That’s right…we’re going to use all 3 yards of ribbon because that quantity makes the toilet paper roll look more realistic. (And just in case there’s a 2021 ribbon shortage, you’ll already be prepared. We’ve learned to expect the unexpected, right? A ribbon shortage could totally happen!)
As you roll, continue to press pieces of double-sided tape to the ribbon so your roll doesn’t accidentally unroll!
4. When you reach the end of your toilet paper roll, personalize the ornament with the dreaded number 2020 using small number stickers or our Cricut pattern.
We prepared black matte vinyl from our Vinyl Starter Kit on a LightGrip Machine Mat, then cut the design with our Cricut Explore Air™ 2 machine. The vinyl was easy to apply to the grosgrain ribbon using standard Cricut transfer techniques.
5. Trim the end of the ribbon with pinking shears. Don’t skip this step—it pulls the whole ornament together!
6. Last, string a piece of festive Christmas ribbon through the spool, then tie it into a loop. We pulled the knot into the spool so our ornament looks tidy.
7. Your 2020 toilet paper ornament is complete! Enjoy hanging it on your Christmas tree for years to come!

I am trying to make this craft, but I am having a hard time finding 3″ wooden spools. Do you have a suggestion on where to buy them?
Thanks!
Melissa Lennig says
I purchased them at Michaels craft store.

This is a great craft! I bought the pinking sheers and ribbon that you specified, yet the cut edge does not come out as crisp and clean as you show it. The sheers are chewing the ribbon edge. Any recommendations as to what I am doing wrong and how I can get it to look as good as yours?
