How to Make a Spice Jar Lid Star Ornament
This year our ornaments were inspired by Song of the Stars: A Christmas Story by Sally Lloyd-Jones, a poetic book about the birth of Jesus. Alison Jay’s gorgeous illustrations paired with the author’s lyrical voice makes this book a classic you’ll want to read again and again.
Weaving grosgrain ribbon through a spice jar lid is a simple way to create the beautiful Star of Bethlehem, featured in the story. Weaving crafts help develop fine-motor skills and provide a unique, fun art experience for kids.
To Make This Spice Jar Lid Ornament You Will Need
- Spice jar lids (we used Market Pantry Jars from Target)
- String
- Yellow ribbon
- Hot glue
- Scissors
Directions for Spice Jar Lid Ornament
1. After gathering supplies, snap the cap off the spice jar lid. Remove jagged edges with a sharp pair of scissors.
2. Invite kids to cut 12-inches of ribbon from the spool, then begin weaving it through the holes in the spice jar lid.
3. Follow the natural outline of the spice jar lid, which in our case was a star. When your child is finished weaving, tie off the ribbon and remove the excess with scissors.
4. Finally, cut 4-inches of twine, knot it, then glue it to the back of the ornament.
Hang the ornament on your tree and enjoy, or gift both the book and ornament to a friend!
