How to Make a Pine Cone Christmas Tree
‘Tis the season for fun, festive crafts! And I can’t think of anything more fun and festive than this adorable Pine Cone Christmas Tree! This no-fuss, paint-free pine cone craft is inexpensive and perfect for practicing fine-motor skills at home or in the classroom.
Note: As a mom of a child who once stuck 4 pompoms up his nose when he was a preschooler, I do recommend adult supervision for all pompom crafts! 😜
Craft Supplies Needed for Pine Cone Christmas Tree Craft
- Pine Cones
- Corks
- Green pompoms (1 in)
- Multi-colored tinsel pompoms (0.5 in)
- Hot glue gun
- Yellow tinsel pompoms (1.5–2 in)
Directions for Pine Cone Christmas Tree
1. Hot glue a wine cork to the bottom of a pine cone. We found it easiest for kids to place the pine cone upside down in a cup when placing the cork.
Tip: Collecting pine cones outside is very fun for kids, but if you are crunched for time, pick up a bag of cinnamon pine cones from a grocery or craft store. Not only are those pine cones prepped and ready for crafting, but they smell amazing as well!
2. Invite kids to press the green pompoms into the pine cone. This is a fabulous fine-motor task! Take it further by inviting kids to use plastic tweezers to pick up and place the pompoms. We chose not to glue our pompoms into the pine cone, but you certainly could.
The amount of pompoms you’ll need depends upon the size of your pine cone.

3. Press the small tinsel pompoms into any gaps to make “ornaments” for the Christmas tree. We used a variety of colors, but you could stick to red, green, and white if you want it to be Christmas colors.

4. Hot glue 1 large tinsel pompom to the top of the Christmas tree for a “star.” The large pompom really pulls this craft together!

5. Repeat the process with more corks, pine cones, and pompoms! We made a total of 3 trees.
If desired, arrange the pine cone Christmas trees into a sensory bin filled with dry navy beans and tinsel pompoms. Add small Christmas toys and sensory bin materials such as measuring cups, spoons, and mini tongs for hours of creative play!
