Mother’s Day Hedgehog Card
Hedgehogs are small animals known for their pointy spines. These energetic animals are absolutely adorable and may remind you of the spring weather! Because these animals typically hibernate throughout the winter, it’s more common to see them reappear as soon as the weather gets nicer outside.
Whether your children already know about hedgehogs or not, you might want to talk to them about these amazing animals before crafting. They’ll have fun making flowers for spines and using their imaginations to create whimsical hedgehogs. Once you’re done completing this craft, you can hang the artwork on the fridge or a bulletin board, throughout the walls of your home or classroom, or even frame them for the kids!

Directions for the Flower Hedgehog Card
Because this is a spring hedgehog, the idea is to use paper flowers as the spines that a hedgehog would typically have on its body. The end result is cute, colorful, and fun! Follow the directions below to learn how to make them.
STEP 1: Download and print the Hedgehog Card Template. Our Spring Hedgehog Card Template is available in our Teachers Pay Teachers shop! After purchasing the template, download it to your device and then print it on white cardstock.
The PDF files include a blank hedgehog template, as well as files to create a Mother’s Day or spring card. We even included a selection of paper wiggly eyes so kids can design their own hedgehog.
STEP 2: Color the hedgehog and flower templates. Use markers, crayons, or colored pencils to color the patterns! We used our favorite Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils.
STEP 3: Cut the templates. Use scissors to cut apart the hedgehog body, card template, and flowers. I will tell you that our flower template is a fantastic cutting challenge for small hands—perfect for practicing those important fine motor skills! Young children may need help or extra time.
STEP 4: Put the craft together. Secure each flower to the hedgehog’s body with glue as pictured below. If you wish to turn your hedgehog into a Mother’s Day or spring card, glue the top of the hedgehog’s body to the second template that contains the text “Happy Mother’s Day!” or “Happy Spring!” If you are using the blank templates, you may wish to add plastic wiggly eyes and a pom pom nose to your hedgehog.
STEP 5: Your craft is finished! Your Hedgehog Card is complete! Use tape to hang the hedgehogs to the refrigerator, a door, or your classroom, or enjoy gifting them to Mom, friends, family, or neighbors.
