Free Printable Butterfly Template
Inspired by our Rainbow Heart Suncatchers, today we are sharing an easy, mess-free way to use a butterfly template to make a colorful Rainbow Butterfly Suncatcher craft.
My kids really enjoyed this craft because they were able to use our home laminator. If you don’t have a laminator, you can achieve the same results with clear contact paper or shelf liner, or use the glue method shared in the Rainbow Heart Suncatcher tutorial instead.

Materials Needed for Tissue Paper Butterfly Suncatcher
- Butterfly Template
- Tissue paper squares
- Thermal Laminator and pouches or adhesive shelf liner
- Black and white cardstock
- Scissors
- Double-sided tape
- Sharpie marker
- Colored pencil, white
Directions for Rainbow Butterfly Suncatcher
1. Download and print the butterfly templates on white cardstock. Cut out the shapes, then set them aside for later.

2. Open the laminating pouch and cover the inside of it with tissue paper squares. Overlap the squares to create interesting shapes and color variations.
3. Close the pouch, then run it through your thermal laminator.
4. Place the butterfly template on the laminated tissue paper, then trace it with a Sharpie marker. The large butterfly template is pictured below.
5. Cut out the butterfly outline, then use a white colored pencil to trace the shape of the butterfly’s body on black cardstock. Tape the body to the front of the suncatcher.
If you wish to “erase” any leftover Sharpie lines, simply moisten a cotton ball or tissue with nail polish remover, then gently rub over the lines.
6. Your Rainbow Butterfly Suncatcher is complete! Hang the suncatchers on a window with double-sided tape.
If desired, you can also use your suncatcher as a puppet by holding the middle of the butterfly and gently fluttering it with your hand.
