This printable Butterfly Suncatcher Craft is the perfect way to welcome spring’s warmth and sunshine. I don’t know about you, but it’s been a long winter here in Ohio and I’m looking forward to blue skies, gardening, and raising butterflies.
Last time we made this suncatcher craft, it was a beautiful focal point in the kitchen window of our home. If you’re looking for a simple craft that truly brings out the beauty of nature, you’re going to love the ease and simplicity of this one!

How to Make a Butterfly Suncatcher Craft
Suncatchers can really add a lot of brightness, fun, and color to a room. And when that suncatcher just so happens to be created by your child, you’re probably going to have your own “light beam” of pride right there in the mix.
Children love this craft because the end result creates something that can be used over and over again. Every time the sun shines, their Butterfly Suncatcher Craft is going to be the star of the room.
Follow along with our step-by-step directions and video tutorial to see how to make these suncatchers two ways!
Note: Color brightness may vary! These suncatchers are not as vibrant as our Tissue Paper Butterfly Suncatchers.
Supplies Needed for Butterfly Suncatcher Craft
- Free Printable Butterfly Coloring Pages
- Inkjet printer
- Translucent vellum inkjet paper
- Colored pencils
- Scissors
- Tape
Directions for Butterfly Suncatcher Craft
1. Download and print the Butterfly Coloring Pages on translucent vellum inkjet paper. For best results, print the pages one at a time. If your printer ejects paper ink side down, you may need to catch the paper to prevent it from pushing against the tray. Otherwise, the ink may smear.
2. Invite your child to color their butterfly with crayons, colored pencils, or markers. All 3 materials will produce the effect of stained glass! In our samples, we used colored pencils.
3. Next, cut out the butterfly. We left a border of vellum around the butterfly to keep the antennae intact.
4. Your suncatcher is complete. Use tape to hang it in a sunlit window!
No Vellum? No Problem!
If you don’t have (or don’t want to buy) inkjet vellum, you can still make this craft with standard computer paper. You will need:
- Free Printable Butterfly Coloring Pages
- Crayons or colored pencil
- Scissors
- Tape
- Paper towels
- Vegetable oil
- Paintbrush
1. Print the butterfly coloring pages on white computer paper.
2. Invite your child to color their butterfly with crayons or colored pencils.
3. Use scissors to cut out the butterfly.
4. Place the butterfly cutout on a paper towel. Use the paintbrush to paint vegetable oil over the entire butterfly. Blot excess oil with a second paper towel. The oil will make the paper translucent, allowing a small amount of diffused light to pass through.
5. Hang the butterfly suncatcher in a bright window. As you can see, it looks very similar to the vellum suncatcher! But it will leave an oily residue on your window.
