Snowflake Ornaments

Yesterday at school, a 5th grade student told me her mother was “Cra cra about Christmas.”

“Like, totally cra cra, Mrs. L.! I’m blinded by all the Christmas lights in the house and she keeps having me do Christmas crafts. It’s just too much! And the music . . . OMG, she totally . . . ”

I only could chuckle as she went on and on. Admittedly, I might be a little “cra cra” about Christmas myself! Why, just last weekend, I gathered my children for a Christmas craft of our own:  simple, handmade snowflake ornaments.

Second Note: Just in case you aren’t down with 5th grade lingo, cra cra is short for crazy.

Our snowflake ornaments are lovely to hang from a tree, holiday gift, or window. They sparkle in the sunlight or the gentle glow of Christmas lights, and can be made independently by children ages 3 and up.

Snowflake Ornaments

Supplies:

• Bowtie Craft Sticks
• Tacky Craft Glue or Hot Glue Gun
• Glitter (generously provided to me from my friends at CraftProjectIdeas.com)
• White, glossy acrylic paint
• Paint brushes
• Holiday Ribbon

Directions:

1. Using the tacky craft glue or the hot glue gun, invite your child to glue 4 craft sticks on top of each other to form a snowflake shape.

2. When the glue has dried, show your child how to carefully paint the wooden snowflakes.

3. Invite your child to sprinkle glitter over the snowflakes while the paint is still wet.

4. After the snowflakes have dried completely, use the hot glue to attach a loop of ribbon to the back. Hang and enjoy!

We will tie these little snowflakes to jars of homemade applesauce, apple butter, and apple scrap jelly to share with our neighbors this holiday season. For now, my boys don’t seem to mind that I’m cra cra for Christmas . . . they adore the crafts, decorations, music, food, and Spirit of Giving! And you know what, in her heart, neither does my 5th grade student. When she was sharing her Mom’s cra cra for Christmas antics with her peers and I, she was smiling, blushing, and her eyes were sparkling. Though she might never admit it, deep inside she appreciated her mother’s effort and the memories being created. So, go ahead . . . be a little cra cra this holiday season, make memories with your family, and enjoy the rest of what 2013 has to offer!
