How to Make a Colorful Caterpillar Suncatcher

When my boys were little, we were absolutely CRAZY about homemade playdough and made fresh batches weekly. But now that my kids are 7 and 9, playdough play isn’t a daily activity staple. I still like to keep playdough on hand for rainy days, but since homemade playdough has a relatively short shelf-life, I purchased a large box of Play-Doh to keep on our craft shelf.

But you know kids…they mix colors and leave the lids off! So if you buy Play-Doh, you end up with extra yellow containers (perfect for storing paints) and lids. I can’t bear to recycle them because they are perfect for crafting!

We recently upcycled our Play-Doh lids to make a sweet caterpillar suncatcher that is perfect for spring! I just know you will like it as much as we do.

To Make This Craft You Will Need

After gathering supplies, attach the Play-Doh lids to each other with Glue Dots. The large Play-Doh lid will be your caterpillar’s head.

When the caterpillar’s body is finished, stick 2 wiggly eyes to the large Play-Doh lid. Use the black permanent marker to draw a smile on the caterpillar’s face.

Next, use scissors to cut 2 antennae for the caterpillar from a black pipe cleaner. Our antennae were about 2 inches long. Stick them to the back of the large Play-Doh lid with Glue Dots.

Last, use scissors to cut 10 fuzzy legs for the caterpillar from the remaining pipe cleaners. Our legs were about 1 inch long. Bend the ends of both the legs and antennae to complete your caterpillar!
