Homemade Apple Crisp
Apple picking is my family’s favorite fall activity. We visit a lovely farm where there is nothing but a barn, apple trees, and a no-fuss hayride to the orchard and back. There is no petting zoo with fat goats, no rides that require expensive tickets, no lines, and absolutely no junk-food. I love it because there isn’t a darn thing that takes attention away from the simplicity of being with family on a beautiful fall day!
We pick our apples—McIntosh, Honey Crisp, Cortland, and Golden Delicious—then imagine the applesauce and desserts they will become. “Of course I’ll have to make apple crisp!” I tell my husband.
“My apple crisp?” he asks.
“No, my apple crisp.”
You see, my husband grew up eating an apple crisp recipe that I don’t really care for, and my favorite recipe is one that he doesn’t like! I guess it’s not a huge problem because, well, can you really have too much apple crisp? (Ahem. And for the record, mine is better!)
This recipe is so moist. The secret is the addition of a homemade apple-vanilla syrup that softens the tart flavor of fresh apples.
“Mommy, I love this!” my oldest son commented when he tried it.
“Well, I think it needs peanut butter,” said my youngest, “Then it will be very good.”
(He must take after his Dad.)
Here’s the recipe. You can make it yourself and decide if it needs peanut butter, or not.
