My preschooler and I have been enjoying many simple fall crafts and sensory activities while my kindergartner is at school. I’ve really been enjoying the time with him, and I can tell he has greatly benefited from the attention. But then something unexpected happened—my oldest shared that he was feeling left out.

And Then It Hit Me

Since the new school year began 3 weeks ago, I haven’t spent any one-on-one time with my oldest son. How could I have let that happen? So the next day, I planned an “older kid” craft just for him inspired by our popular Scrap Ribbon Tree Ornaments.

Scrap Ribbon Pumpkin Suncatchers

I love the way sunlight glows through the scraps of woven ribbon in these pumpkin suncatchers. The reds, oranges, browns, greens, and yellows produce a vibrant burst of color on dreary fall days. The canning ring reminds me of the fall harvest and of all of the delicious preserves I have stored in the basement for winter.

To Make This Craft You Will Need

• mason jar regular mouth canning rings
• mason jar frog lid inserts
• assorted orange, yellow, green, and brown ribbon (cut into 5-inch strips)
• moss green chenille pipe cleaners
• hot glue gun
• scissors

Directions

1. Invite your child how weave 5-inch strips of ribbon through the frog lid insert. This part can be tricky, so you might need to help.

2. When the lid is complete, squirt hot glue along the inside of the canning ring. Press the lid into the canning ring. When the glue is dry, use scissors to cut the excess ribbon from the inside of the canning ring.

3. Rotate the canning ring so the ribbon is at a diagonal angle. Wiggle a piece of ribbon through one of the tiny openings (this ribbon will be the stem of your pumpkin). Use a small dot of hot glue to connect both ends of the ribbons into a loop.

4. Cut a green pipe cleaner in half and twist it around your finger. Attach the “vine” to the inside of the stem with a small dot of hot glue (I pressed it in-between the canning ring and ribbon stem). If desired, put a second vine on the other side.

5. Remove excess hot glue strands from the ornament. Hang on the window with a small dot of hot glue. Don’t worry about glue on the window—if it doesn’t cleanly peel off, it will scrape off with a razor blade.

My kids love the colorful pumpkin patch on our window. I have to admit, I do too!
