When I was a little girl, creating fingerprint art was one of my favorite rainy day activities. I always get a kick out of introducing the boys to things I loved as a kid. A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, Peanut-Butterscotch Rice Krispie Treats, and Popcorn by Frank Asche—things my boys now adore too! I recently gathered them around the kitchen table to create Fingerprint Comics. What a hit!

We began this art activity by cutting white card stock into strips. The boys created funny characters by pressing their fingertips into an ink pad and stamping them on the paper. They used Sharpie markers and colored pencils to add detail to their cartoons!
We laughed out loud as they created nutty characters! Captain Kitty, Super Cheese, and Mr. Stretchy Arms (he’s an evil villain) were just a few of my favorites!
It was entertaining to watch the boys get creative and bring their illustrations to life. In the picture below, my youngest son draws a tornado blowing through his city! As he drew, he actually made sound effects!
What an engaging, creative art project—one I know we will enjoy again and again!

As a huge fan of all the Ed Emberley finger print books I think this is a brilliant idea! I’ll be sharing on The Crafty Crow soon 🙂

Thank you Cassi! 🙂

The drawings (buildings, trees, money bags, etc.) look like they were done by an adult, and the motor skills evident in the coloring look like kids. Did you draw while they told you a story, then let them color things and add some details?

My 7 year old drew his own comics (top 2 pictures). My 4 year old colored in drawings I made (bottom 3 pictures). He was more into coloring that day, but has since illustrated his own! My big guy came up with his own stories, but my little one told his story aloud as I drew it.

This is a great idea. I cannot think of a more creative use for fingerprint art!
